Trainees were empowered on the first day of the Bella Abzug Leadership Institute’s Intensive Leadership and Debate Program. The program began today, July 18th.

“At BALI, I knew I would find girls that have found, or are beginning to find, their voice when it comes to ‘taboo’ topics like race, gender, and politics,” trainee Maia Regman said.

Trainees met each other for the first time and were given the chance to start bonding. These girls will be together for the next 12 days.

In the morning, the trainees were welcomed by Liz Abzug, the staff members, and the interns. There was a brief overview of BALI itself and the works it has done.

Before lunch, the trainees greeted the first speaker, Kelly Tsai. Tsai emphasized that the intention of writing was to be heard.

BALI girls participated in physical activities with Tsai as she presented that writing ideas and interactions are interrelated. Afterwards, the girls spent time doing writing exercises.

For the final session, the girls were introduced to their debate groups, which are led by members of the New York City Urban Debate League. The debate topic for this year is based on Title IX. The girls will be trained for the debate tournament that is scheduled for next Friday.

A fellow trainee expresses her opinion about her first experience at BALI.

“The first day was incredibly impactful for me because I was able to tell from everyone’s presence that they were unapologetically unique… Meeting budding leaders in middle school, high school, and college was both fascinating and inspiring,” Regman said.
